Our model is only a theory. We have to show that the model is valid as the logic of Tao philosophy, by using the logic to analyze the Tao Te Ching. The verses in the Tao Te Ching are the only “experimental evidences” for our theory. In order to show that the model is valid, we have to show that the interpretation of the Tao Te Ching reflect the principle described in the model.
It is well known that the words of Lao-tzu are ambiguous. Without a principle, we have to wander among all possible meanings of each Chinese character. However, with a principle, we will be more confident in choosing the meaning for each word to reflect the principle. We can thus have a more coherent interpretation.
With a coherent interpretation, it will also be less difficult to translate the Tao Te Ching into other languages. It has been difficult to translate the Tao Te Ching coherently due to the fact that the principle and logic have not been well understood. Now, we can be guided by a clear principle, we will be able to choose proper words to compensate the differences in the language structure. Our prime goal is to translate the principle, so the efforts should be similar to what is required for a successful translation of a “scientific theory.” The principle of Tao serves as the ultimate goal of our translation.
Our translation towards such an ultimate goal is published as a separate book: Tao Te Ching: An Ultimate Translation. This translation shows that the principle of Tao and the logic discussed in this book can clearly be observed in all Chapters of the Tao Te Ching.
A Paradigm Shift
With the logic model, we have resolved many issues traditionally associated with Tao philosophy. Our model may serve as a new platform to induce a smooth paradigm shift. However, the old paradigm has very deep root and it will take time and persistence to bring about a change.
Tao philosophy can now be discussed on the same footing as many other ancient philosophy of nature. The mystery remains. We may refocus the prevailing mysteries of Tao into a core principle and a logical platform. We can start to re-engineer our understanding of Tao philosophy. The old paradigm may be broken down gradually while the new paradigm is established.
